Reality Check (study for a protest) is an ongoing collection of dismissed school brass bells — objects whose function was to regulate time, movement, and the behaviour of bodies in institutional spaces. Disused, they lie on the floor, apparently immobile and out of order, connected by electrical wires to a time-randomizing device.

At unpredictable intervals, alone or in a disorderly chorus, the bells ring. Vibrating, they move, shifting position slightly, generating an ever-changing sculptural materiality — accumulating, over the course of an exhibition, signs of time and movements. The sculpture's form is mutable: what is found at the opening is not what remains at the close.

The work operates in the gap between the object's residual capacity and its suspended function — between a bell that can still ring and one that no longer has anything to rule.
